In a remarkable display of corporate social responsibility and humanitarian effort, Sime Darby Auto ConneXion (SDAC), the exclusive distributor of Ford in Malaysia, has once again partnered with the Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Malaysia to uplift Orang Asli communities. This collaboration highlights the OA-Eco Farm programme, a beacon of hope for sustainable living and economic empowerment in Kuala Rompin, Pahang.
A Commitment to Community Empowerment
The OA-Eco Farm programme is designed to instil self-reliance among Orang Asli families through agricultural initiatives. By providing essential training, tools, and subsidies, this programme paves the way for sustainable income sources and enhances food security. This initiative is crucial, especially considering the COVID-19 pandemic's exposure to severe food insecurity and the challenges posed by deforestation and land encroachment in these communities.
A Collaborative Effort
The programme's latest phase saw a generous US$10,000 donation from the Ford Motor Company Fund, illustrating Ford Motor Company's philanthropic commitment. This fund facilitated a hands-on effort by 22 SDAC staff volunteers who, together with the GPF team, made significant contributions, including donating seedlings, farming equipment, and installing solar-powered fencing systems. Their dedication reflects SDAC's ongoing commitment to corporate citizenship and community development.
From Farm to Market: A Sustainable Model
The challenges of establishing sustainable farming practices in Orang Asli villages are manifold, from the scarcity of resources like seeds and farming tools to environmental hurdles like droughts and poor soil conditions. The OA-Eco Farm programme addresses these issues head-on with Syntropic Farming methods, which not only enhance food security but also promote environmental conservation.
This initiative aligns with Ford's goal to not only be a leading vehicle provider but also contribute positively to societal growth and sustainability.
Moreover, the introduction of Kebun Amai, an online marketplace, marks a significant step towards economic empowerment. This innovative platform allows Orang Asli farmers to sell their produce and artisanal goods directly to consumers. This innovative platform is part of GPF's broader mission to support Orang Asli communities by providing access to clean water, energy, education, and sustainable livelihoods.
Gratitude and Future Prospects
The collaborative efforts of SDAC and GPF, backed by Ford Motor Company's philanthropy, underscore a shared vision for a better world. As David Jeffrey, executive director of Ford Asia Pacific Distributor Markets and South Korea, expressed, this initiative aligns with Ford's goal to not only be a leading vehicle provider but also contribute positively to societal growth and sustainability.
The OA-Eco Farm programme is a testament to what can be achieved when corporations and foundations unite for a common good. It symbolises a step forward in the journey towards sustainability and empowerment for the Orang Asli communities of Malaysia.
Together, SDAC and the Global Peace Foundation are planting seeds of hope and sustainability for Orang Asli communities, showcasing the power of collaboration in fostering positive change.
